How has public transit impacted your life?
I have been married for 33 years. We have always been a 1 car family. In fact, we have gone without an automobile for a period of three years and relied on bus transportation only. It was not always an easy thing to do. For one, grocery shopping was difficult. The infrequency of some schedules made bringing home cold or frozen foods a challenge. For another, evening social activities were all but lost to us because the buses did not run late enough in the evenings. I have ridden the bus to/from work for a number of years. I do so because it is something I can do to help our air quality and I find it less stressful than driving. I have read many a good book while riding the bus and, if I want to, I can even catch a short nap. Riding the bus is also less expensive than driving my car to/from work. I purchase a 31-day pass and my employer reimburses a portion of that cost to me.
Eliminating buses prior to 5am start times forced me to leave my home earlier and to take an alternate route just to get to work on time. Even though we have a car, I sometimes use the bus on the weekends but with the reduction in Saturday service I will have to wait for connecting buses longer than I would be riding on the bus so I’ve had to drive to shop on the weekends.
