This position is part of the Maintenance of Way team and will serve as the technical expert for Valley Metro's train control/signal systems ensuring safe operation of Valley Metro light rail and Tempe Streetcar. Valley Metro Rail currently includes of 30 miles of light rail and 3 miles of streetcar alignment. 

The Signal Systems Engineer is responsible for all operational, maintenance, configuration, and technical aspects of Valley Metro’s Signaling Systems. Assures Signaling and all support equipment remain compliant with Valley Metro quality standards, specifications, FTA and/or ADOT requirements, and all safety-related aspects.  Serves as the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all of Valley Metro’s Signaling Systems in support of Maintenance of Way and Management.

This is a technical role as an engineer responsible for train control systems. The purpose of this position is to provide rail transit signal system evaluation and analyses of engineering design, integration, and construction work including: grade-crossing warning systems; microprocessor and relay based interlockings, wayside signal equipment, positive train control and block signal systems for Valley Metro projects. The successful candidate will rely upon experience and knowledge of train control and signal systems and regulations to ensure that Agency Safety, Technical Performance, Quality, Cost and Schedule Goals are met or exceeded.
The Signal Systems Engineer is an exempt (salaried) position.

Qualifications/Requirements

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering  
  • Five (5) years of experience in design, construction, or operations and maintenance of rail transit signal systems
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties may be considered
    Desired Qualifications:
    •Experience in public transportation
    •Experience in project management
    •Signal maintenance experience
    •Developing specifications for Signaling and associated equipment
    •Experience with all aspects of Signal System procurements
     
    Licenses and Certifications:
    Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
    Valid Arizona Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under Valley Metro's Vehicle Insurance Policy
